This week we had cause to visit Coimbra, a city I had heard of and often driven straight past on the A1 motorway without a second thought. The Portuguese call it the city of learning, it has the oldest University in Portugal, having been there since 1290.
I learnt that it is a fantastic way to spend a day. The whole of the centre is pedestrianised and very visitor friendly, even though it is built on several different levels, most of it is easily accessable. It has some stunning architecture and churches to view. The city is served by the river Mondego and it is spanned by three magnificent bridges, which allow for some great picture opportunities.
The city was Portugal’s capital city from from 1139 to about 1260. It has Roman and Moorish influences everywhere. If you are stuck visiting the same old places all the time give this jewel a whirl,It is only about 1 hour away, you won’t be disappointed.
