The monastery was founded by the first Portuguese King, Afonso Henriques, in 1153 and was considered one of the most important mediaeval monasteries in Portugal. It was listed as a World Heritage site in 1989 and whether you are enjoying the grand architecture or admiring the central garden it is easy to see why.
An entrance fee of €5 is charged except on Sundays and public holidays when entrance is free between 09:00 and 14:00.
