The museum has very complete exhibits of archaeology and ethnology, but the main focus of the museum is the palaeontology hall, which presents casts of famous dinosaurs, as well as fossils recovered from the Late Jurassic Lourinhã Formation. Among these is the famous theropod nest found at the beach of Paimogo, which contains eggs with embryos inside, probably belonging to Lourinhanosaurus.

We took our four year old dinosaur fanatic to this museum wondering what he would make of it.
He loved it! Our only problem was prising him away, even the promise of an ice cream was no competition for the complete skeleton that towers over you as you enter the dinosaur room. There is also a huge Triceratops head and several other instantly recognisable dinosaur skeletons.
It’s not quite the Natural History Museum, but considering that this tiny museum receives no government funding it is pretty impressive.
The museum is also dedicated to local social history so there are also many interesting items giving a great insight into times gone by. Exhibits include agricultural tools, childrens toys, clothes and even a complete house showing how people used to live, (which my husband said was just like ours!). I’m sure I would have been fascinated had I not been running after my son on his way to the dinosaur room!
The visit ends in the tasteful gift shop, where we bought post cards and a lovely book.
The museum is small so it doesn’t take a great deal of time to see everything but it is very well laid out and has something to interest all the family.
My only critism is that there was no tea room.
